Terry Frost was born in 1915 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Taken prisoner in Crete whilst serving in WW2, Terry filled his time in a POW camp by painting, When he was freed, and came home to the UK, he decided to continue painting, studying at the St Ives School or Art and at Camberwell College.
In 1952, after moving back to St Ives with his wife, Kath, Terry began teaching at the Bath Academy of Art at Corsham Court. He was the Gregory Fellow at Leeds University 1954 - 1956, and continued teaching there until 1957. During this time as a teacher, Terry developed the style of abstract painting, collage and construction that became his trademark.
One man shows in London and New York followed in the late 50's and early 60's. Terry was made Artist in Residence at Newcastle University in 1964. in 1965, he became a full-time lecturer and subsequently Professor of Paintinga tthe University of Reading, where he continued to teach until 1981.
Numerous UK and International group and solo exhibitions followed, culminating in 2000 in a major restrospective, Terry Frost: Six Decades at the Royal Academy of Arts in London .
Terry was elected Royal Academician in 1992 and received a knighthood in 1998. Until his death in September 2003 he lived and worked in Newlyn, Cornwall.
